Dimity Stoyle Wins Lizzy Surf Series On Sunshine Coast
(Sunday 22nd June, 2008): QUEENSLAND's top female surfers continued their rampage on the Sunshine Coast today with the second leg of Lizzy Surf Series wrapping up.
Boasting a 60-strong field and $ 1000 large in prize money, the state's hottest female surfers carved their way through the final day of competition in clean 0.5-1-metre beach break conditions at Mudjimba.
Buderim star Dimity Stoyle broke through for her first win of the 2008 season beating fellow Sunshine Coasters Naomi Stevic (Sunrise Beach) and Tara Christie (Coolum) as well as Bateman Bay surfer Jess Grimwood with the event's highest combined heat total of a 18.96 (out of a possible 20).
Making the most of the incoming high tide conditions, Stoyle mixed critical moves with down-the-line speed to snag $1,000 and 1000 rating points.
"I'm so happy to take it out," said Stoyle.
"To win in front of my friends and family on the Sunshine Coast makes it that much better. The $1000 prize money is handy as well."
It was an easy win for the 16 year-old natural foot, bagging a 9.07 in the opening minute of the 20-minute final, before netting a near perfect 9.87 to blast her opponents out of the water in the fast peeling right handers.
"It was really good to start with that 9 point ride," she said.
"My confidence was high and I was in good rhythm all the way through the final. I'm stocked!"
Stevic finished runner-up with a 12.66 total, just ahead of Christie (12.33) in third, with Grimwood (3.94) in fourth.
Suffolk Park young gun Ellie Jean Coffey fell short in her bid for back-to-back open women's crowns, finishing 5th overall.
After two rounds of competition, Stoyle sits atop of the open women's ratings with 1860 points, nearly 300 clear of Coffey (1610 - Suffolk Park) in second with Stevic (1590) in third.
Making her victory that much sweeter, Stoyle upstaged a talented field of surfers to win the under 21 girl's division today.
Surfing young gun Renee Heazlewood (Moffat Beach) shredded her way to victory in the U/14 division, Currumbin's Eden Putland took out under 16 divisions, while Naomi Stevic (Sunrise) won the under 18 division.
Alex Headlands surfer Sharon Jackson secured victory in the Masters (Over 35) division, and backed it up with a win in the senior's (Over 28) division.
But the all-female series isn't all about fierce competition.
The Lizzy Surf Series is designed to be a really social affair and is a perfect event for women and girls to have their first crack at competition surfing.
Acting as a fantastic introductory series, the open women's division incorporated a social division for the opening event of the year.
Former Sunshine Coaster Linda Fisher (Coolangatta) surfed away with the social division title, trumping her foes with a classy performance.
The Lizzy Surf Series finalised with the finals of the open women's division as well as amateur divisions from the under 14's through to masters (over 35).
