Corey claims Waeco Alley Classic

Current Queensland Championship Circuit ratings leader Corey Ziems (Currumbin, Qld)) today claimed the 2010 WAECO Alley Classic securing a slice of Queensland surfing history etching his name once again alongside the likes of elite Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour competitors Joel Parkinson (Snapper Rocks, Qld), Luke Munro (Currumbin, Qld) and Adriano De Souza (Brazil) on the event’s winners list.

Ziems proved his 2007 Alley Classic win was no fluke, leaving nothing to doubt today as the famed Currumbin pointbreak delivered clean, contestable, 1m waves for the finals. “I’m so stoked to win the WAECO Alley Classic for a second time,” said an elated Ziems. “I live just around the corner, I was a member of the Alley Boardriders when I was younger and to win at my home break is a great feeling,” he said.

SATURDAY'S last round of finals of Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Snickers in Coffs Harbour will be remembered for some of the most amazing junior surfing performances in recent times.

The last three champions were crowned and Diggers Beach became the playground for the world's best under-16 surfers with Matt Banting on Port Macquarie and Kingscliff teenager Codie Klein reaping the highest rewards.

The talented teen shred the testing 0.5m beach break conditions to claim the prestigious under-16 event ahead of a host of the region's big name groms.

Lizzard Surfers Dominate SA Champs

Lizzard and Lizzy team riders Gavin Roberts, Shawn Dennis and Heather Clark cleaned up at the recent South African Surfing Champs held at St Mikes on the KZN South Coast by winning three out of four individual titles on offer. Held over four days in cooking 4-8ft waves, surfers from six provinces competed in the four divisions (U20 boys, open men, U20 girls and open women).

Lizzard junior team rider Shawn Dennis (Durban) took out the tightly contested under 20 division thanks to excellent wave selection in the final, he locked down the highest score of the heat on one of the best set waves of the day. This is Shawn's first major win and is sure to boost his confidence for the upcoming junior series and WQS events.

Royden Bryson Wins Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro

Royden Bryson (East London) made the most of the great conditions at Durban's North Beach as he out surfed Durban local Antonio Bortoletto in the final of the 1* WQS Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro. Bryson led from the start, and despite his best efforts Bortoletto was unable to chase down Bryson's eventual heat total of 12.25, coming close with a score of 11.90. Bryson and Bortoletto traded waves in a very closely contested final, with Bryson adopting a high risk approach by boosting a big and clean front side 360 air. The seventh edition of the contest, which was held between 15 - 17 May, offered over US$10 000 in prize money available and featured an exciting man
on man heat structure.

Drama filled day 2 of Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro

While day 1 of the Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro saw all the big names in South African surfing cruise through the first two rounds with relative ease, the early heats on the second day saw many of the same big names fall by the wayside. The Lizzard celebrates the 7th edition of its premier contest this year, which is being held at Durban's North Beach this weekend, 15-17 May. With over US$10 000 in prize money available in the WQS 1* event, and an exciting man on man heat structure, high performance and crowd-pleasing surfing was almost guaranteed.

Top seeds survive day 1 of Lizzard Nando’s Surf Pro

All of the top seeds taking part in this yea's Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro, at Durban's North Beach this weekend (15-17 May), kept alive their hopes of claiming victory, and the US$2500 first prize, in the WQS 1* event. The event, now in its 7th year, has adopted an exciting man on man heat structure, a format which is known to result in competitive and exciting surfing battles.

Mike Frew, Lizzard's Marketing Manager, was "stoked with the progressive and high risk surfing that we have seen so far". "The weather has been great and the surf very contestable, so we are happy with how the event unfolded on the first day". Looking towards the next two days, Frew is excited to see "what kind of surfing goes on in the man on man heats, as we are sure to see many massive battles".

Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro to feature man on man heats

This year's Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro, at Durban's North Beach this weekend (15-17 May), has adopted a man on man heat structure, a move which is expected to produce competitive and exciting surfing battles. The contest, now in an impressive seventh year, has R100 000 in prize money on offer, as well as 250 WQS points for the winner.

The WCT style contest format, with a three man opening round followed by man on man heats throughout the contest, "is quite a big deal and the surfers are very excited at the prospect of these close battles" said Mike Frew, Lizzard's Marketing Manager. This format should give the ex WCT surfers and the top WQS surfers, such as Brandon Jackson (Durban North), Ricky Basnett (Durban) and Roydon Bryson (East London) a distinct advantage as they have so much more experience in surfing man on man heats.

2009 Lizzard Tag Series & Expression Session # 1

Strand boasts a record entry in first Lizzard Tag Series and Expression Session event for 2009

A record entry of 66 surfers competed in the first of four Lizzard Tag Series and Expression Session events which was held in glorious weather and good 3 foot surf at Pipe on Strand Beach, Sunday (May 11).

Celebrating its third year, the popular Lizzard Tag Series involves girls and boys from as young as seven to 16 and sees them competing in teams of five surfers each. The contest is exclusively a team event and each heat is forty five minutes long. A specialized Surfing South Africa relay format is used to determine the results.

Mason Mania for Finals of Lizzy Surf Slam

IT was the Mason show once more on the Gold Coast today, as surfing young gun Sarah Mason (Tugun) dominated the Lizzy Surf Slam.

The 14-year-old whiz kid picked up from where she left off yesterday, beating defending champion Dimity Stoyle (Buderim) to win the open women’s final.

The win guaranteeing her a shot at the world’s top surfers in the trials of next year’s Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast.

Durban's North Beach will once again host the Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro, a 1* WQS rated event. The contest, now in its seventh year, will take place between 15 and 17 May. With R100 000 in prize money up for grabs, as well as 250 WQS points for the winner, South Africa's top international surfers will need no invitation to battle it out.

Among the many confirmed entrants lurk a number of surfers who have a realistic shot at claiming the WQS points and the prize money, all indicating that this will be a very tightly contested event.

Durban's Bortoletto eyes Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro victory

Lizzard-sponsored Antonio Bortoletto, Durban, is one of many of South Africa's top surfers who will be taking part in the seventh edition of the 1* WQS rated Lizzard Nando's Surf Pro. The event, which will run between 15 - 17 May, has R100 000 in prize money up for grabs, as well as 250 WQS points for the winner.

Bortoletto, who was born in Sao Paulo Brazil in 1979, only started surfing after he arrived in South Africa. His first stand up wave was at Durban's Addington Beach in 1986, where he used to go surfing with his mother. Bortoletto has been surfing for 22 years, 14 of them competitively, and has travelled extensively throughout his impressive career. Having spent the last many years surfing on the international WQS, Bortoletto has a vast amount of contest experience.

2nd Place for Lincoln Taylor in France

LA SAUZAIE, France – Lincoln Talylor placed second in the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 4-Star Protest Vendee Pro today after French surfer Joan Duru stole the crown from Taylor with a last minute wave in the final encounter of the 2009 event. Duru, The French man clinching the valuable 1500 ratings’ points counting for the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) International and regional ratings and US$ 12 000 for his run.
